Prothrombin complex concentrate (PCC) contains small amounts of heparin to prevent clotting within the vial or during administration. PCC is a blood product rich in clotting factors (e.g., factors II, VII, IX, and X) and has a high potential for thrombogenicity. Without heparin, the concentrate might form clots during storage or infusion.
However, the amount of heparin in PCC is minimal and not enough to significantly interfere with its intended procoagulant effect in patients. This anticoagulant is primarily added to ensure the stability and safety of the product. For patients with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), specific formulations of PCC, such as heparin-free options, are available.
